Water, Anyone?

Are you drinking enough water?  I read a while ago that most people are chronically mildly dehydrated.   Symptoms are headaches, irritability, and lack of energy.  And the long-term effects of mild dehydration on our health are many…. higher risk for kidney stones, urinary tract infection, digestion problems, etc. Drinking enough water will help prevent these problems, as well as help clear up skin problems.

Some other interesting facts… by the time you “feel” thirsty, you are already dehydrated.  So waiting until then is waiting too long.  If you’re feeling hungry, you could be thirsty and not realize it.  Drinking caffeinated beverages doesn’t count!  Caffeine actually works as a diuretic, depleting your body of more water.

So what do you do if you can’t “get into” drinking all 8 glasses of water we’re supposed to be drinking?

Here are some ideas…

1.  Fill up a large (McDonald’s iced tea) cup with ice water and carry it around during the day, sipping as you go.  When it’s there all the time, it’s convenient and you tend to absent-mindedly just sip during the day.  Having it in the car is a VERY good idea too.  The warm car and A/C or fan blowing on you can be very drying.

2.  Commit to drinking a glass of water before any caffeinated drink.  At least you can counteract the effects of the caffeine a bit.

3.  Commit to drinking water at lunch and supper.  It saves a LOT of money when you eat out especially, AND it’s so much better for you!

4.  And these are some other ideas I’ve been developing it over the past few days.  😉  If you just hate water and can’t bring yourself to skip your favorite drink for water at meals, in the car, etc., try these.  When you brush your teeth, drink a glass of water.  That should get you (at least) two extra glasses per day.  After you wash your hands in the bathroom at home, drink a glass of water.  That could give you at least two to four more (depending if you’re a stay at home mom or if you’re not home much during the day).  If you take medication, drink a full glass of water with it (that’s always a good idea anyway!).

One Response to Water, Anyone?

I saw on TV the other day that they (whomever “they”is) did a study and people who drunk two glasses of water before each meal lost more weight then the people who drunk it throughout the day. It was suppose to make you fuller and thus made you eat less. And that whenever we are hungry throughout the day we really probably are just thirsty. I have really tried to start drinking more water lately. Who doesn’t want to lose a few pounds, right?
